Edgar Meij is the head of the Search division in Bloomberg Engineering’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) group. He holds a Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Amsterdam and has an extensive track record in information retrieval, natural language processing, and machine learning. Edgar leads several teams of researchers and engineers that work on information retrieval, query understanding, semantic parsing, question answering, and smart contextual suggestions. Together, these researchers and engineers build, maintain, and leverage the company’s search, autocomplete, and question answering systems, which operate under severe latency constraints. They employ all of Bloomberg’s data sources about companies, people, functions, fields, financial instruments, and geographic locations, as well as the Bloomberg Knowledge Graph to enable Bloomberg Terminal users to ask complex questions and issue complex commands in natural language. Edgar is also a senior scientist with a background in artificial intelligence, information retrieval, natural language processing, machine learning, large-scale computing infrastructures, knowledge graphs, and semantic search. He has published more than 110 papers in top international venues, has been cited by researchers more than 2,000 times, and is a (Senior) Program Committee member of virtually every major conference in the field, including TheWebConf, WSDM, SIGIR, CIKM, KDD, AAAI, ACL, and EMNLP. He is also a member of the Editorial Board of the Information Retrieval Journal. He has taught several tutorials and organized various workshops on knowledge graphs, entity linking, and search at top-tier conferences.
